In the first and second refrain Hughes personifies "Cold" and "High." In their contexts they are capitalized, even though, grammatically, they normally wouldn't be. It should be cherished and kept safe, so it is allowed to age and even get better with age, just as wine does.Īnother important type of imagery used is personification. In the same way, this poem serves to show that life is valuable, and one should not throw it away like it's nothing. Wine is something that many people consider to be very valuable, and people do not waste their wine. Giving the reader an image to imagine when thinking about life, so they can draw comparisons. An important one is the simile "Life is fine! Fine as wine." This is significant because it emphasizes the meaning of the poem.

Hughes uses a lot of different types of imagery in this poem.
